Movies Can Now Be Felt! Has Multi-Sensory Cinema Experience Arrived?

Hello, today, has a revolutionary technology truly arrived in the cinema industry? As always, we’re settled in our seats, popcorn in hand, ready to immerse ourselves in the magical world of a film, aren’t we? We are ready, but we’re no longer just talking about a simple image, or even high-resolution images, like in the past. With the magnificent harmony of sight and sound, we embark on journeys to different realms with new technologies. But what if I told you that soon, our cinema experience won’t be limited to just our eyes and ears? You might say, ‘No way!’ Yes, you heard right. It’s now becoming possible to step into films, to experience them with all our senses. This is where the ‘multi-sensory cinema experience‘ comes into play. In short, movies can now be felt.

    Has Multi-Sensory Cinema Experience Arrived?

Imagine, let’s say you’re watching a car racing film, an F1 (Formula 1) movie, and as you take the turns, your seat vibrates with you, creating a feeling as if you’re behind the wheel. If you say, ‘But this already existed, there were things like 8D – 9D,’ then know that your seat won’t just move or just blow air at you; it will also be able to dispense scents. Or, there will be things that provide a technological cinema pleasure, like the slight jolt you feel in your chest during an explosion scene, or raindrops falling on you during a rain scene.

This is precisely where ‘haptic feedback‘ comes in. This essentially means interaction through the sense of touch. Vibrations, pressure changes, and even tiny water sprays are things that will allow you to personally experience the physical events within the film. Thanks to specially engineered motors beneath your seat, special sensors, and effects programmed according to the film’s flow, you won’t just be watching; movies will now be felt. You’ll literally be drawn into the film, living that moment firsthand.

This technology adds a completely different dimension to action films, but even in dramatic scenes, feeling the tension and trembling experienced by the character will strengthen your connection to the story in ways you can’t imagine.

The Sense of Smell Comes to Cinema

What about smell? It’s one of the senses that triggers the most powerful and direct emotions in humans, as you know. Imagine the scent of damp earth and pine wafting into your nose during a scene set in a forest, and you’ll experience this while watching the film. It might sound a bit odd, but imagine a farting scene, and you’ll diffuse that smell 😂. Or the delightful aroma of freshly brewed coffee during a meal scene, and even the metallic smell of blood you’d sense at a crime scene. These ‘scent diffusers’ promise exactly that. Special devices working in sync with the film will release the right scent at the right moment, and instead of being confined to just a visual and auditory world, you’ll suddenly find yourself right in the middle of that scene. If you ask, ‘Is this really possible?’ Yes, absolutely possible, in our opinion, it will only happen when cost and technology find a common balance.

Considering how important smells are in our emotional memory, it’s not hard to understand how deeply this experience could affect us. Of course, a bit of engineering comes into play here; scents need to be diffused and cleared at the right time, with the right intensity and speed, so they don’t interfere with the next scene. But the current state of technology seems ready to overcome these challenges.

You’ll Be Able to Experience Explosion Scenes in Films

Now for the third sense: ‘airflow control.’ I know, it sounds a bit strange, but you’ll see how effective it can be when you think about it. Imagine the gentle breeze you feel on your face during a storm scene, picture the scorching wind you experience in desert heat—you can recall your hottest moments and that suffocating feeling—or the pressurized air wave you might feel during a spaceship launch. Think about April 23rd celebrations, envisioning a helicopter taking off, or the pressure from jets passing close by. This way, you’re not just watching an image; you’re personally experiencing the warmth, cold, and wind of that atmosphere. Especially imagine the enjoyment you’ll get from fantastic or sci-fi films; feeling the vacuum of space or the atmosphere of an alien planet will elevate the viewer experience to a whole new level. When combined with haptic feedback, for instance, during an explosion, you could feel both the jolt and the wind from the shockwave. This will exponentially increase the film’s realism and immersion, making you, as the protagonist, truly live that moment.

Multi-Sensory Cinema Experience Will Be Available for Purchase for Your Homes

Now imagine putting all of this together. Cinema halls and home entertainment systems, combining these technologies, will offer us a sensory feast beyond just seeing and hearing – encompassing touch, smell, and feeling. A film will no longer be just a story; it will become an immersive experience package that envelops all your senses. This will be a revolutionary development, starting in cinemas but expected to spread to home entertainment systems. In our opinion, this means products that will sell even more than robots will soon hit the market. Seriously, just think, wouldn’t it be incredibly amazing to suddenly find yourself in the Amazon rainforest or the boundless reaches of space while watching your favorite movie on your couch in the evening, either alone, with your partner, or with your family?

However, it’s important not to forget that these types of technologies will compel you to purchase many additional items for them to function. Think of it like buying a printer; you’ll need to buy or refill its cartridges every time they run out. If you don’t buy them, your printer will simply sit idly by.

Of course, remember that these technologies are still in their early stages. But they are developing more and more every day. We’ve already started to see such applications in some specialized cinemas and experimental home systems. With advancing technology, it’s not a distant possibility, in our opinion, for these systems that enrich the ‘viewer experience’ to become more accessible and widespread. Who knows, perhaps in the very near future, such ‘multi-sensory cinema systems’ will become standard in every home.

I can’t wait to experience this new world, can you?
