Does Technology Improve Humanity or Does Humanity Improve Technology?

Looking at the light cast by human history, it is evident that technology and humanity have always been intertwined, nourishing each other, and in a constant relationship of mutual transformation. Humankind has undergone an evolution, from simple stone tools to today’s artificial intelligence systems, to meet its needs. This long journey has led us to re-examine and re-interpret the question, “Does technology improve humanity or does humanity improve technology?”, not just as a question, but as a manifestation of existence itself.

This question is not merely a debate about technical progress. It is, in fact, a global inquiry into how humanity defines itself, how societies are guided, and how the future will be shaped.

If we approach this topic from a different perspective, we can also say this: Humanity is the creator of technology. Curiosity, discovery, necessity, and imagination are the fundamental and indispensable driving forces behind technological innovations. The issues and problems that arise during humanity’s journey through life actually stem from the environment in which humanity exists. For humanity to transition to another process means developing its mind’s problem-solving capacity. Looking back a bit, to the witness of history, we see the discoveries and inventions we’ve encountered. For instance, the wheel, automobiles, the printing press, airplanes, electricity, the internet, or the digital ecosystems we are developing today, could not have emerged without such problems and issues. In other words, for something to exist, some problems must exist. Or, for it to be produced, let’s say, there will either be a problem or a need that people will have to solve. Therefore, it would be most accurate to say that technology is a product and a reflection of human intelligence. Humanity’s cultural accumulation and scientific knowledge level have increased from these experiences. Technology has developed in parallel with this and will continue to develop as long as humanity exists.

    Your Perspective Guides Technology

However, in this relationship, humanity is not the sole driver. The intricate entanglement of this relationship, finding existence within each other, has also given technology the opportunity to transform humanity. This has led modern medicine, for instance, to finally accept working alongside ancient holistic medicine. In fact, the results born from this collaboration have extended human lifespan. Communication technologies have eliminated borders. Artificial intelligence and automation have re-evolved our ways of thinking and working models. Today, technology has become a decisive factor across a broad spectrum, influencing human behaviors, expectations, and lifestyles—from individuals’ learning speed and social interactions to economic structures and global politics. In short, a life without technology is a lifestyle where humanity also disregards itself. Yes, that’s a bit assertive, but the situation is exactly like this. For example, do you think there’s no technology in the primitive tribes still existing in Africa? Even wooden arrows made for hunting an animal represent technology in its most primitive form. In this context, technology has transformed into both a tool and a guiding element of human development.

Technology develops humanity, humanity develops technology.

Therefore, the relationship between humanity and technology has never been one-sided. It possesses a cyclical nature. Humanity develops technology, and technology, in turn, provides the capacity to re-develop humanity by expanding its capabilities. This is because humanity is endowed with the ability to process matter in the most beautiful way. These abilities and mutual interaction have created the fundamental dynamism that makes progress possible. However, how this interaction will take shape in the future—whether the values produced by humanity will serve its existence, or if humanity will drift away from the truth of its own existence—these are events that humanity will experience and observe over time. Technological developments that proceed in harmony with human values and ethical principles are benefit-centric. For humanity’s role in the development of technology is not only as a creator but also as a responsible agent.

Coming back to the question at the beginning of the topic, there isn’t a single answer. This is because these two elements cannot be considered independently. It is the embodiment in life of a formation in the mind, of existence. In other words, if there is humanity, there is technology. Humanity is the power that develops technology. Technology, on the other hand, does not possess the power to develop spontaneously without human touch. No matter how many robotic innovations there are today, it is not possible for innovations to pave their way without human involvement. Technology, empowered by human hands, contributes to human development by transforming both individual and societal thought. What is important is that this cycle is balanced and guided to serve the common good of humanity. Technology develops humanity, and humanity develops technology. The main issue is ensuring that this mutual development can be carried into a sustainable and ethical future for humanity.
